A “Summer Snowflake” fell from torrid blue
It’s exquisiteness beyond compare
I gently caressed it in not one hand but two
Then scanned the skies and found them fair
‘twas perfectly symmetrical in every detail
Gossamer and crystalline an anomaly for sure
I deemed to preserve it in this I shan’t fail
For in quest to embrace beauty perhaps I’d found cure
How could this be on August 3 amidst a broiling sun?
I carefully cupped my hands despite a roiling shake
For so long I’d searched could it be that I’d won?
A meteorological aberration…or the “icing” on the cake
To the freezer and glass jar my snowflake’s new home
Each day I peeked in awe at the delicate structure housed within
Neither Zeus on Olympus nor Caesar in Rome
Had experienced the wonder only I’d been given
‘twas not long, summer was gone, and dark clouds filled the sky
And I sensed my precious token longed for family
Safe in cooler, we climbed mighty mountain, my snowflake and I
And watched God’s blanket of white lay soft upon the trees
I opened the jar and from somewhere afar an icy gale blew across
My treasure and my friend was taken by the wind
Eyes now moist I reached to the sky knowing “she” was lost
Then sat up against tree and died happily never to see her again
Two hikers the following summer found me underneath that tree
And despite the condition of the body was a smile you could not fake
The pair of men stood reverently, astonished by that they did see
For on my forehead, as Sun burned red, was a pristine angelic…melting snowflake
