Payback

The sun burned black in a saffron sky
Tree branches “stretchhhed” skyward
As if hairs on the nape of a terrified neck
River currents surged backwards
Invisible straws sucking the Earth’s blood dry
A wailing sound intensified throughout the day
And that night the man in the moon howled despairingly
Melanoid eyes dripping cosmic tears
