When We Were Doves

Feathered, slender with Angel’s tips
Our wings soared high up above
Atop mighty pine I kissed bird lips
We swore we’d always be in love

The world was ours, yours and mine
We shared our bounty with others too
Our sunsets spent in celestial wine
Sunrise brought forth ribbons of blue

Each day we foraged to build the nest
Never once fearing the oncoming lead
You’re pierced with twig upon your breast
I fell in grief thinking you were dead

You soldier on with heart that’s broken
Your wound healed, a soul laid bare
No further words will thus be spoken
‘Til heaven’s nest…I await you there
